Where are you going?
For much of my life, I was focused on the next step—the next exam, the next rotation, the next milestone. Primary school to high school, to college, to medical school, to residency, and then fellowship. Each accomplishment felt like a stepping stone to the next. But when I reached the end of my fellowship and finally started my career, I felt disoriented. Despite all I had achieved, I suddenly had no clear sense of direction.
Recently, I came across two powerful questions in the book of Genesis. God asked Hagar, who was in the wilderness after being sent away by her master: “Where have you come from, and where are you going?”
These questions made me pause and reflect on my journey: Where have I been? Where am I going? I knew where I had been; I had all the battle scars to show, but I didn’t have a clear sense of where I was going next. This left me vulnerable, accepting positions and responsibilities that brought me little satisfaction and left me overwhelmed.
Why are these two essential questions we should all regularly ask ourselves?
Look Back with Purpose
Your past is a critical part of your journey. It shapes who you are and teaches valuable lessons. But sometimes, it also leaves behind baggage or patterns that no longer serve you. Understanding where you’ve been helps you decide what to carry forward and what to release.
Look Ahead with Vision
Equally important is having a clear vision of where you’re going. Without it, even the greatest achievements can feel empty. True fulfillment comes when your goals align with your values and purpose. Where do you want to go? Who are you becoming along the way?
Trust the Journey
Like Hagar, we all face seasons of uncertainty. But the wilderness is not the end—it’s often where God meets us most profoundly. He sees you, and He’s ready to guide you toward a future full of purpose and hope.
